It’s Harvest Time!
There are many ways to harvest and cure cannabis, but most involve the following steps:
- Harvesting: This is the process of cutting down the cannabis plants when they are ready. The optimal time to harvest depends on the strain, the growing conditions, and the desired effects. One way to determine the harvest time is to look at the color and shape of the trichomes, which are the resinous glands that cover the buds. When the trichomes are mostly milky and amber, it means that the buds are mature and potent. Harvesting should be done in the early morning or before the lights turn on, to preserve the terpenes and cannabinoids.
- Drying: This is the process of removing the moisture from the buds, which prevents mold and preserves the quality. Drying should be done in a dark, cool, and well-ventilated area, with a relative humidity of 45-55% and a temperature of 18-21°C. The buds should be hung upside down or placed on a drying rack, with enough space between them to allow air circulation. The drying time can vary from 5 to 15 days, depending on the size and density of the buds. The buds are dry when the stems snap easily and the buds feel slightly crunchy on the outside.
- Trimming: This is the process of removing the excess leaves and stems from the buds, which improves the appearance, flavor, and potency. Trimming can be done before or after drying, depending on the preference and convenience of the grower. Some growers prefer to trim before drying, as it reduces the drying time and space, and prevents the leaves from curling around the buds. Others prefer to trim after drying, as it preserves the terpenes and cannabinoids, and makes the trimming easier and more precise. Trimming can be done by hand or by using a trimming machine, depending on the quantity and quality of the buds.
- Curing: This is the process of storing the buds in airtight containers, such as glass jars or plastic bags, which enhances the flavor, aroma, and potency. Curing should be done in a dark, cool, and dry place, with a relative humidity of 55-65% and a temperature of 18-21°C. The buds should be loosely packed in the containers, leaving some room for air. The containers should be opened once or twice a day for the first two weeks, to allow the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, and to prevent mold and over-drying. The curing time can vary from 2 to 8 weeks, depending on the preference and patience of the grower. The longer the curing, the better the quality.
